IMPORTANT UPDATE: Temporary Referral Waiver
The Defense Health Agency (DHA) has waived the requirement for outpatient referral approvals for TRICARE West Region beneficiaries enrolled in a TRICARE Prime plan. This waiver is in effect retroactively from January 1, 2025, through April 30, 2025. This means TRICARE-authorized specialty care providers don’t need to wait for TriWest to approve referrals issued by your primary care manager (PCM) before providing outpatient care. However, you still need a referral from your PCM before receiving specialty care.
• Exceptions to the waiver include inpatient care, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)/Autism Care Demonstration (ACD) services, Laboratory Developed Tests (LDT), and Extended Care Health Option (ECHO) services. These services still require pre-authorization from TriWest.
• You should obtain a copy of your PCM referral and bring it to your specialty care visit. You can also bring a copy of the TRICARE West Region Referral Approval Waiver Letter, available at www.tricare.mil/west. Your PCM may provide the referral through various methods, including the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal (3-5 days), mail (3-5 days), or a referral customer service office for pick-up. If your PCM is civilian, they may send the referral electronically. Regardless of how you receive it, keep a copy for your records.
