David Grant Medical Center complies with federal disability access standards and internal medical group policy.
Permitted Animals:
- Service animals as defined under federal law
- Approved therapy/activity animals participating in authorized DGMC programs
- DoD-owned animals performing official duties
Pets, emotional support animals, and companion animals are not permitted inside DGMC facilities.
Service Animal Access:
Service animals may accompany their handlers in areas open to the public. However, animals are not permitted in designated Restricted Areas, including but not limited to operating rooms, sterile procedure areas, ICU and inpatient units when not part of a treatment plan, MRI/CT rooms, oncology treatment areas, emergency department treatment rooms, medication preparation and storage areas, and food preparation areas.
If a patient requires access to a Restricted Area, staff will work with the patient to provide a reasonable alternative accommodation.
Be prepared to answer:
- Is the service animal required because of a disability?
- What work or task has the animal been trained to perform?
Staff may not request documentation or inquire about the nature of the disability.
Handler Expectations:
- Maintain control of the animal at all times
- Keep the animal leashed or otherwise under control
- Ensure the animal is housebroken and healthy
- Remove the animal if it becomes disruptive or unsafe
Additional Reminders
- Treat all staff and patients with courtesy and respect. Do not interfere with clinical care or staff duties.
- Help maintain a clean and safe environment. Dispose of trash properly and report any damage or vandalism.
