TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. –
Carolyn Gregorian’s journey to becoming the Defense Health Agency’s 2024 Pharmacist of the Year wasn’t a straight shot. It was a winding road paved with career changes, family moves, and a cross-country relocation that ultimately led her to David Grant Medical Center (DGMC) and a life she’d only dreamed of.
After graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1985, Gregorian expertly balanced the demands of a pharmacy career in both the public and private sectors while raising her family. The frequent relocations that often accompany military life presented new hurdles at every turn, but Gregorian’s passion for her profession never wavered.
In 2014, a lifelong dream of California living brought Gregorian to DGMC and the vibrant Bay Area. The move wasn’t without sacrifice, including a challenging commute. But it also brought an unexpected twist of fate: a home renovation project introduced her to the contractor who would become her husband, and opened the door to the thriving cycling community of Marin County.
Carolyn Gregorian's selection as the DHA Pharmacist of the Year is a culmination of exceptional leadership and impactful contributions to patient care and pharmacy operations. She spearheaded numerous initiatives, including leading a team that averted thousands of near-miss medication errors, securing standardized pay charts for joint service pharmacy staff, and ensuring critical medication access for high-risk patients. Her leadership during a major cyberattack on a national prescription processor ensured seamless prescription processing for thousands of beneficiaries. Furthermore, Gregorian's dedication to process improvement, training, and collaboration resulted in significant enhancements to patient safety, operational efficiency, and cost savings across multiple departments. Her commitment to excellence has demonstrably improved the quality of care for patients and elevated the standards of pharmacy practice within the Defense Health Agency.
"Carolyn's infectious enthusiasm and unwavering commitment to both her team and the military community are truly inspiring," said Major Richard Baker, Chief of Outpatient Pharmacy at DGMC. "She embodies the spirit of teamwork and fosters a supportive environment where everyone can thrive." That sentiment is echoed by Gregorian’s colleagues, who describe her as a constant source of positive energy and encouragement.
Gregorian’s dedication extends beyond the pharmacy walls. She’s an active volunteer in the local community, further demonstrating her commitment to service.
As she looks toward retirement, Gregorian hopes to maintain her connection with the DGMC team, perhaps by establishing a program to recognize others who exemplify her dedication and spirit.
Carolyn Gregorian’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance, community, and positive leadership. The 2024 DHA Pharmacist of the Year is more than just a title; it’s a reflection of a remarkable journey and an inspiration to us all.
